| This past week was relatively wet with a total of 1.03" of rain across five days. Temps were seasonal with highs in the upper fifties to low sixties and lows in the upper thirties to lower forties. The ground is now moist which is an improvement over the previous months and it appears the rains will continue into this week. The birch trees are almost through dumping their pollen and the boreal forest has greened up quite nicely. While still no local moose sightings the wild birds are active at my window feeder and I hear the loons on Question Lake almost every morning. I have yet to see the usual hordes of mosquitoes which are generally thick from mid to late May through mid-June; this may be due to the rather dry winter and spring. Overall, we're heading into summer in pretty good shape although we sure could use more rain... |

| Heavy rain and torrential rain has been falling this morning. The temperatures have been much below normal last week and several degrees below normal for May in 2025. Precipitation has been well above normal for May with periods of extreme wetness. The ground is becoming supersaturated again on the morning of May 30, 2025. There was a watermain break on Johns Hill Road several days ago due to shifting ground caused by the supersaturated soil. The lawns are growing much faster than normal. Part of route 8 is closed in Campbell County due to a land slide. Mosquitoes are a serious problem in Campbell County. There are areas of localized standing water. Neighbor's inground swimming pool had overflowed again on the morning of May 30, 2025 making my backyard super wet. Lawn care companies working over time to try to keep up the extreme amount of mowing work. Almost severely wet again. Pond level above normal. Despite having 2 fairly clear & dry days, today on June 2, 2025, I had a hard time cutting my lawn because the lawn mower keeps on jamming. The grass still is very wet and dewy this morning. The ground still is supersaturated on June 2, 2025. Neighbor had pumped water out of their inground pool to lower the water level to back to normal on June 1, 2025 which had overflowed on May 30,2025. Much below normal temperatures the past 10 days. |

| Although outside the boundaries of the past week, about 12:00 AM on Saturday, 5/24 a tornado devastated much of London, KY 30 miles north of Barbourville. Locally the wind raged and howled. At midnight I sent a group text to friends asking if everyone was OK. London residents replied, "We're hunkered in the hallway with the dogs. OMG, a tornado just went through." In those moments, they lost their attached garage and front porch. When they awakened the next morning, all the houses across the street were GONE. So it was with much of London and parts of Somerset, KY to the W. Other London friends lost their entire home.
Locally, in Barbourville, KY it is wet. It is so wet. There were some sustained downpours this past week. Other days were sunny until they weren't. Dark nimbus clouds moved in and buckets of water fell from the sky for ten minutes. Then it cleared up again. Often, an hour or two later, the pattern repeated. Today, 6/1, marks the first dry 24 hours in a week.
I planted my raised bed on Sat, 5/24. Within two days, seedlings began to appear. By Sunday, 6/1 tomatoes, okra, zucchini, lettuce, carrots, peas, kale and bibb lettuce appeared. However, a local friend who direct seeded weeks before I did reported that all of her established seedlings had washed away by 5/29. She has to start over. And yet, I categorized current conditions this week only as "moderately wet" because the immediate area is not flooded....

Temperatures were below normal all week until yesterday (5/31) and today with above normal temperatures near 90 degrees. I received only 0.23 inch of rain from this week (on May 26 and 27). Total precipitation for May was 2.42, which is 50 percent of normal. Total precipitation for the year is 73 percent of normal.
Society and Public heath
Canadian "wildfire" smoke is very noticeable yesterday and today with a milky sky and haze. Moderate air quality today as smoke has settled to ground level. Not going outside today.
Energy
My solar energy production is 20 percent below normal yesterday and today. No heating or air conditioning this week until yesterday and today.
Plants and wildlife.
Soil is dry in the top 2 inches, then slightly moist from 2 to 4 inches, then drier below this depth. Grass and other vegetation is green in most areas, but dry (brown) in areas of full sun on the south side of houses and trees. Not as green as last week though. Approximately 20 species of birds (about 120 birds total) and several squirrels are using my bird bath on a daily basis. Mosquitos have slightly decreased in the yard and adjacent woods, and are less than usual. The garden needs water daily.
Water
Water level in Standing Bear Lake (approximately 0.2 mile to the east of here) is approximately 2 feet below normal level. Area creeks and ponds are also about 2 feet below normal.
Agriculture
Farm fields about 1 mile east of here are planted, but are dry. Looks like germination is about 75 to 80 percent of what has been planted. Crop growth is minimal and is behind normal for this time of year.

| Thus far for my “Watershed,” that resides in the “Upper Passaic River” Watershed, that covers from 1.5 miles to the NW to about 1.5 miles to the SE and is about 1 mile in width and in the general shape of a diamond;
There were FOUR days with measurable precipitation and zero days with trace precipitation for a total of 2.16”, the past seven days [Sunday-Sat]. River and stream volume the past three days increased significantly over small lake dams west of this station. As of Sunday morning, 6/1; one was moving at 100% percent the width of the dam 6.5 miles from this station at a slow volume still with some observable turbidity. The other, 2 miles to the west, decreased, covering now 80% of its respective fall and moving at a similar volume also with some / less observable turbidity. The Madison Golf Course, adjacent this station had observable play again this past week. The ground around this station is wet and soft to walk on. Grass and weeds required maintenance the past week. Maple trees are looking well, along with the Juvenal Oak’s and two Ginkgo Trees, also are looking good. Bumble Bees and a hornet were observed the past week. House Finch were active, along with Cardinals, Mourning Doves and Crows. The Song Bird feeder was not refilled this week. Neighborhood squirrels, Rabbits and chipmonks were also observed.
Over the past 31 days; this station has captured and reported 9.21 inches of precipitation. There has been 61 days of precipitation the previous 142 days of CY2025 [1/1/2025 to 5/31/2025] for a “Calendar Year” total of
22.82”, compared to 71“ Precipitation Days” and a [CY] total of
27.57” the same [year to date] in CY2024. So far, compared to last year; this station has received 4.75” less precipitation than a year ago. Some other totals from previous years, for comparison, are;
YTD2023- 18.79”
YTD2022- 21.67”
YTD2021- 18.84”
YTD2020- 15.94”
YTD2019- 26.99”
YTD2018- 26.00”
YTD2017- 20.67”
YTD2016- 18.67”
YTD2015- 15.88” LAST****
The running ELEVEN year average reported precipitation for THIS station is: 21.25” inches, placing this station at an increased surplus of 1.57” from the 11 year average. Considering the eleven year annual comparable total for this station and the amount of Rain the past four days, as well, is why I believe that it is appropriate to move this week’s report to the “Moderately Wet” side of the Condition Scale Bar.

| Going to go with Moderately Wet again because 5 out of 7 days had precipitation and the temperatures have been cool and cloudy. Thus, the ground is very moist. It would be difficult to dig without clodding up. Grass is very lush and low plants are also lush and leafy. It's so moist that it is truly surprising that I've not yet seen any mold or mildew. For the most part, plants appear to be taking advantage of the extra moisture with no real damage. My neighbor reports that her basement never flooded this spring so that transition from winter to late spring was gentle on the surface to groundwater flow.
Trees are almost fully leafed out, a few ashes and a sumac are late but they could be stressed. First apple is already showing larger than pea sized fruit and a few apple bloom petals are still around.
In the garden, tomatoes that went in before this last bout of ~5 days of cool rain liked the rain, but only held ground on growth. They were NOT fans of the temps in the 40s. Cold tolerant seeds like lettuce however DID start to pop up. Peas are doing OK, but really it's a battle with the rabbits. No clear winner yet. Non-cold tolerant seeds like cukes, zucchini, and some flowers have been sitting still, saying "no way" even though they are in moist ground.
A catbird appears to want to set up a nearby nest but I have not been able to see it yet, if it has started. The hummingbird also was noticeably absent during the cold weather.
Allergies have been somewhat dampened during the cooler weather but not by much-- they are still at their all-year high level right now. Ugh.
Note: air conditioners are not yet installed (they were in by May 15 last year) and the furnace is still running. Definitively, we are finishing a cool wet spring. |
