General Awareness Agriculture Plants & Wildlife Water Supply & Quality
|
| July station rainfall ends at 6.08" or about 145% of climatology, although the regional pattern is quite variable. This follows a very dry June (~50% of normal) but that was preceded by a very wet May (nearly 200% of normal), and in turn by a very dry March-April. Hopefully, August does not follow the wet-dry pattern! Year-to-date station precipitation is very close to normal at 27.67" or 106% of normal. The Water year (Oct. 1 to date) deficit is down to just over 2 inches or 94% of NOAA normal.
Hydrologic indicators suggest near normal conditions. The USGS gage on the Roanoke River at Roanoke 7-day flow as of 7/30/25 was 141 cfs or the 47th percentile of all flows for the date (95% of median). Carvins Cove local water supply reservoir as of 7/31 was at -1.6 feet below full pond (95.9% of capacity) 0.2 ft. increase in the past two weeks. The US Drought Monitor (USDM) valid as of 7/29/25 showed no drought or abnormally dry conditions anywhere in VA or nearby WV and NC.
July temperatures at nearby KROA climate site were substantially above normal (as of 7/30) at 79.7F or +1.8F from 30-yr mean. It may end up in the top 10 of warmest July at KROA depending on today, but better than 2024 at 3rd warmest. |
